The rota

Each three-month rotation includes one set of three nights and one set of four nights, along with approximately one Friday and Saturday call and one Sunday call.

Workload & stress

While workload can be heavy at times and on-call shifts can be challenging, it is generally considered a positive and recommendable place to work.

Support on call

Tallaght operates a paired on-call structure within a four-intern team, typically comprising two medical and two surgical interns covering mixed wards.

Interns work in pairs, with on-call support from a Medical Registrar on Call (MROC), Surgical Registrar on Call (SROC), and a Clinical Coordination Nurse (CCO), providing strong senior oversight.

You do not have to live in Tallaght
Vibes generally pretty good
Very enjoyable surgery jobs compared to rest of Dublin

Sense of community, differentiates from more brutal tertiary-centre reputation of other Dublin hospitals
Cons
Not many niche jobs (ED, Linn Dara/Paeds, allegedly very boring)
Urology and Vascular are particularly tough

Advice

You will be ordering a lot of scans and consulting many other teams, try get good at it fast to save yourself the headache later. Same goes for discharge summaries you need to get efficient with them.

Day to Day

Purely based in medical short stay unit. Ward rounds and general jobs for a list of ~10-25 patients with 3 interns, 1 reg and rotating consultants. Lots of good basics of medicine - IECOPD, syncope, heart failure. Very solid job, a bit admin heavy due to high patient turnover.

4/6 consultants are legends. Don’t mess with McCabe or Prof Murphy! Great opportunity to see cool neurology cases, don’t freak out about studying beforehand.

Day to Day

Ward rounds for ~12 patients, admin (i.e. preparing radiology meeting documents ahead of MDT). Reviewing patients before receiving infusions for MS etc. Occasional LPs.
