How are medicine points calculated?

Entry yearLeaving CertHPAT inputMaximum
2027 entryFull points, up to 6252027 overall score, up to 150775
2026 historicalModerated above 550, up to 565Overall score, up to 300865

For example, 565 Leaving Cert points plus a 2027 overall HPAT score of 150 gives 715 out of 775. Enter the overall score from your 2027 result directly: it is already on the 150-point scale. Your percentile and individual section scores are different measures.

CAO’s 2027 medicine booklet confirms this scoring method. Do not halve your 2027 overall HPAT score or convert a previous year’s result. HPAT must be taken in the year of entry.

The 2026 CAO medicine brochure gives the historical moderation bands. For example, 551–555 counted as 551 and 621–625 counted as 565.

Does this tell me whether I will get medicine?

No. The 480-point Leaving Cert minimum is an eligibility requirement, not an offer threshold. You must meet the relevant school’s subjects in the same sitting, and sit HPAT in the entry year. Places are then allocated competitively.

The 2026 medicine cut-offs describe that year’s offers on the old scale. They cannot predict a 2027 offer. HEAR, DARE and mature entry have additional selection rules.
