On-call: what to expect

The rota

Interns and SHOs share the same call rota, so it is just you and the MROC on.

At weekends the MROC is usually in the AMU seeing GP referrals or reviewing patients flagged for weekend review by their teams, which means you are called about nearly everything else.

Workload & stress

Nurses are often helpful and will do bloods and cannulas for you if you are in their good books.

Support on call

Interns and SHOs share the same call rota, so it is just you and the MROC on.

Many of the medical registrars are locums and cover is unreliable, so you can end up managing unwell patients with little support.

Study & sit an exam (e.g. MRCS/MRCP) while here, it is a waste of a rotation otherwise and you will learn very little. You cover MAU with the Reg & and the SHO for one week each month which is the best learning you will do (seeing undifferentiated pts, determining management plan & discussing w/ Reg). Wards are dull and you will be seeing the same patients every day with no active issues.

Day to Day

Prepare list, dry round with Reg & divide ward round, Ward round takes ~2 hours so done by 10.30 usually. If you do tasks/notes as you go then can be done everything by lunchtime. Check bloods & update list, PM dry round with reg. Attend discharge MDT on Wednesdays. Admissions from MAU/transferred patients if on call. Will rotate who gets go go home early each day
