On calls you are the only intern for hospital at medical nights… can be non-stop.

Surgical call is once every 4 days, with one weekend per month.

No surgical nights.

Workload & stress

Medical on-call is described as extremely heavy, to the point of feeling like torture.

Advice

On call reg and SHO on site during working hours, well supported. Majority stable elective patients, with a very high turnover. This leads to a lot of paperwork (notes, dc summaries), but also lots of time for hands on practical experience (eg packing noses) with on call reg and SHO. Rare to have a very sick inpatient.

Day to Day

Ward round, lots of discharges, lots of practical exposure for those who seek it out, loads of opportunity for research (one consultant has many research ideas and very keen for NCHD involvement)
