You work on average 1 to 2 weekends per month (a Saturday or Sunday per weekend, never both).

Very handy to have a year in only one hospital. You get to know your fellow interns, the other specialties and the MDT well, and it makes accommodation and a commute routine much easier to settle. Hours are long like any other intern job, but not commonly 70 to 80. Surgical jobs can be relatively quiet depending on the specialty compared with other hospitals. Medical jobs are hit or miss, some busier than others. Call can be busy, like everywhere else, with 2 interns on nights covering around 200 patients each. The MROC is often a locum overnight and is of variable quality. The main downside is that everything is on paper: the lab and discharge summary systems are ancient and blood forms are handwritten. MedLIS was due to be introduced from July 2026, which should change part of that. The residence is small, which is expected for a small hospital. The cafe is good but expensive, the canteen is decent, and there are great lunches in the nearby hospice. HR is not much use, which seems to be common across HSE sites.

Advice

Achille's team is really lovely. When you are on take, it’s chaos (1 in 3 weeks). The other two weeks are bliss (think half days, getting to gym, etc.)
