Five-year specialist radiology training, with entry possible directly after internship or after further clinical training.
How the length works
Direct entry after intern year; no BST required.
Duration: 5 years as Specialist Registrar; FFR (RCSI) exams from year 4
Annual intake: 39 places (2025); 36 (2023); set annually with NDTP
Competition: Applicant numbers were not published in the sources checked. Selection uses application scoring and interview.
Applications: 2027 intake dates not yet announced (Faculty of Radiologists, tbc as of 26 August 2026). The 2026 intake closed 5pm, 17 November 2025, strictly enforced; interviews late January; July start

Radiology accepts applicants after internship or further clinical training into a five-year specialist programme.
Shortlisting score
The 2026 self-scoring sheet stated a guaranteed-interview threshold of 26 of 60. Only the two highest-scoring research items count. A first-author paper in a journal with an impact factor of at least 2.5 scores 10 points. Membership exams and completed BST years also receive marks. Use the scorecard for the intake you are applying to.
Exams and fellowships
FFR examinations begin in year 4. Subspecialty fellowships, including interventional, neuro, paediatric and breast radiology, are commonly undertaken abroad after CSCST.

A verified self-score of 26/60 guaranteed an interview for the 2026 intake. A first-author paper with impact factor 2.5+ scores 10 alone. The late-January interview may include an OSCE of image interpretation.
Where you train
Nine accredited training sites for the 2026 intake; you rank as many or as few as you wish and are matched by a Gale-Shapley matching model. The Faculty's ~125 Diagnostic Radiology SpRs train across twelve diagnostic centres; the major university teaching hospitals nationally.
