Military Medicine Training in Ireland

An integrated five-year route to specialist accreditation in General Practice and Military Medicine.

How the length works

One integrated five-year pathway leading to both GP and Military Medicine specialist accreditation.

Duration: 5 years, incorporating the full GP programme and additional military training.

Annual intake: No current advertised number verified.

Applications: For the 2027 route, applicants must complete both the GP training application process and the Defence Forces application. GP Application A closed 7 October 2026. The current Defence Forces page contains an Apply link, but its separate exact closing date was not established in this audit.

Entry: After internship, satisfying both the Irish College of GPs recruitment requirements and the Defence Forces competition. The current Defence Forces page requires a primary medical degree or equivalent, full Medical Council registration, medical and physical fitness, character/security clearance and citizenship or work-entitlement criteria, and age under 50 on 31 December 2026.

Exams: GP programme assessments and MICGP requirements, plus military curriculum assessment. Current military assessment detail and contract terms must be checked in the competition documents.

Exam guides

SJT & CPST

Entry assessment. Military medicine applicants follow both College GP selection and the Defence Forces competition. Check both sets of application instructions.

MICGP

Required pass. The integrated route includes the GP programme and its qualification alongside the separate military requirements.

Military medicine combines general practice with care in operational and occupational settings. Training adds military primary care, occupational and public health, aviation, dive medicine and pre-hospital emergency care, with supervised experience in Defence Forces locations at home and abroad.

Route and applications

The programme incorporates the complete GP training route and additional military training over five years. Successful completion supports dual specialist accreditation in General Practice and Military Medicine. Applicants must complete both the Irish College of GPs and Defence Forces processes and satisfy the requirements of both bodies.

Selection

Candidates who meet both bodies’ eligibility criteria can proceed to the military interview and screening process. Defence Forces screening includes fitness, medical assessment and security requirements. The public pages do not provide a current numerical military interview rubric.

How selection is scored

GP recruitment uses SJT, CPST and SBCA. This does not replace the separate Defence Forces interview and screening. A current numerical military selection rubric, exact Defence Forces deadline and current service-commitment terms were not verified; do not reuse the 2019/2020 contract as current.

Entry and selection guidance checked 26 October 2026.
