MRCS

Higher specialty training in vascular surgery in Ireland is a six-year RCSI programme (ST3-ST8). Formerly part of general surgical training, vascular surgery became a separate specialty as case volume, complexity and minimally invasive endovascular techniques grew; RCSI notes about half of vascular patients present urgently or as emergencies. Successful completion of the FRCS exam is required for the Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training and Irish Medical Council registration eligibility.

Entry is at ST3 after Core Surgical Training (ST1-ST2) and the MRCS, by direct progression from CST2 or through the Equivalent Standards Route. Selection uses the ISPTC 1,000-mark progression score: a 600-mark CST record, a 40-mark academic score and a 360-mark five-station interview, with 60% minimums at shortlisting and interview. RCSI's progression metrics record two appointments in the 2025 cycle, both via the Equivalent Standards Route.
