Routes towards this programme
These are possible routes; the entry requirements above still apply.
Pharmaceutical physicians work across the life of a medicine, from research and clinical development to regulation, safety monitoring and responsible use. Careers include pharmaceutical companies, clinical research organisations and regulatory agencies. The work draws on evidence appraisal, statistics, clinical judgement and communication, with patient and public benefit guiding decisions.
HST lasts four years. Applicants need an appropriate job at an approved training site and documented employer support before applying; acceptance onto HST does not itself supply that employment. Training covers regulation, clinical pharmacology, statistics, medicine development, drug safety and the healthcare marketplace. Each trainee completes core goals and at least one specialty module, plus a relevant postgraduate diploma or MSc by the end of Year 3.
The 2027 application window closes at 5pm on 29 October 2026; the interview date is TBC. RCPI publishes a 100-mark interview matrix. No separate shortlisting marks are published on its current page.
