Cost: €500 written + €500 clinical (€1,000 for both sections at the published 2026 rates). 2027 fees are not yet listed.

Who can sit it

Register with JFICMI and satisfy its accredited-training requirements. The August 2026 regulations require at least eight months of supervised ICM, including six in a general adult ICU, and evidence of FCAI, MRCPI, FRCSI, FRCEM or equivalent. Module timing, recent experience and in-training assessments also matter. Read the current candidate regulations before applying.

When NCHDs sit it

Trainees on the national programme must attempt the examination in their first year to progress to Year 2. Fellowship conferral also requires 12 months of signed-off recognised training. The exam and the full ICM CSCST have different completion requirements.

Preparing

Use the current JFICMI curriculum to plan revision. The Faculty provides past SAQs and an example answer on its standards and documents page. Older papers help with practice but do not establish the current format; use the August 2026 regulations for that.
